Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 9, 2026
Opus is a private listening journal for classical music. We built it the way we’d want to use it: your library of works, recordings, and notes lives on your device and in your iCloud account — we never have access to your identity or personal information.
This policy explains exactly what Opus does and doesn’t do with your data.
What Opus collects
Opus collects only what you choose to enter into the app:
- Composers, works, and recordings you log
- Star ratings and notes you write
- The date and time of each entry
That’s it. No name, no email, no location, no contacts.
Where your data lives
All journal entries are stored on your device. If you have iCloud enabled, entries are also synced to your private iCloud account so they appear across your Apple devices. This sync is handled entirely by Apple — your data passes through Apple’s iCloud infrastructure, not ours. We do not store your journal on our servers. The only time journal data leaves your device (beyond iCloud sync) is when you use the AI-powered suggestion feature described below.
If you delete the app, your local data is removed. Data in iCloud can be deleted from Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Opus.
Apple MusicKit
Opus uses Apple’s MusicKit framework to connect with Apple Music’s catalog. With your permission, MusicKit lets Opus do two things:
- Search the Apple Music catalogwhen you’re looking up a composer, work, or recording to log. Your search query is sent to Apple to return matching results.
- Surface your recently played classical albums on the home screen, so you can log them with one tap. Opus reads your recently played items from Apple Music and filters them to classical works. This list is generated on your device and is not sent to us or anyone else.
Opus does not read or store your full library, full listening history, playlists, or any other Apple Music data beyond what’s needed for the two features above.
Apple’s handling of MusicKit data is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
You can revoke Opus’s access to Apple Music at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Media & Apple Music.
AI-powered suggestions
Opus includes a “Next Listen” feature that uses artificial intelligence to recommend classical works based on your listening journal. When you use this feature, the following journal data is sent to our server: composers, works, recordings, star ratings, notes, and entry dates.
Our server forwards this data to Anthropic, a third-party AI provider, to generate your recommendations. No personally identifiable information is included — no name, email, device identifier, or account information is ever sent.
Your journal data is not stored on our server and is not retained by Anthropic after processing. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train its models.
This feature is opt-in. No journal data is sent until you explicitly choose to enable suggestions.
Analytics and tracking
Opus collects anonymous, aggregate analytics to understand how the app is used and to identify errors. This data does not include your name, email, or any information that identifies you personally. It is never linked to your journal entries.
If you choose to allow tracking when prompted by iOS (App Tracking Transparency), Opus may share limited, non-personal data with an advertising partner to measure whether our ad campaigns lead to app installs. No journal data or personal information is shared for this purpose. You can change this choice at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
If you have opted in to “Share with App Developers” in iOS Settings, Apple may share anonymized, aggregated diagnostic data with us. You can change this setting at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Children’s privacy
Opus is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any data from children.
Data sharing
We do not sell or rent your data. Third-party data sharing is limited to: anonymous journal data sent to Anthropic to generate your recommendations (see above), anonymous aggregate analytics, and — only with your explicit consent — limited install-measurement data shared with an advertising partner.
Your rights
You control your data because it lives on your device and in your iCloud account. You can edit or delete any entry within the app, or remove all data by deleting the app and your Opus iCloud container.
Users in the European Union (GDPR), the United Kingdom, and California (CCPA) have additional rights regarding personal data. Opus does not collect personal data that identifies you — these rights are exercised by managing your data directly in the app and on your Apple devices.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we’ll change the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
